Define the function before selecting the model
Start valve selection by defining the task: isolating the pipeline, controlling flow, or preventing reverse flow. Valve types differ in their closure members and flow passages, so nominal size alone is not a sufficient selection criterion.

Select ball, gate and globe valves according to their specific construction and service requirements. For check valves, also consider the direction of flow and the pipeline arrangement.
Specify throttling requirements separately
If continuous flow regulation is required, specify the flow range, differential pressure and control requirements, then select a construction suitable for that duty. Do not assume that every on/off valve is suitable for throttling, or determine its function solely from its handle or actuator.
